“Calling the Moon” is it a painting I made in honour of my dear friend Satish Gujral. He is a well-known Indian artist who passed away in 2020 and was a good friend of mine for many years. Satish Gujral was one of the first to say publicly that he respected my work.
I made this painting with lots of movement using simple lines, a style that he always liked. The painting includes a reference to his style of painting parrots. He once even joked with me saying that he was obsessed with parrots in the same way that I can obsess about monkeys.
The parrot is a shape shifting animal, calling out in the night for the moon. I love the moon myself. I am sure to look at the moon when I notice that there are no clouds in the sky. Maybe the shape shifter is me.
My mother, who is a tapestry weaver, really liked this painting. She made a beautiful tapestry based on it that is just the same size as the original. It is included here.
